FDPS Competitions

Members of Frodsham and District Photographic Society are eligible to enter the Monthly Set Subject Competitions. There are three categories of entry, Monochrome Prints, Colour Prints and, new this season, Projected Images. Separate sections remain for Entry level and Advanced level members.

The decline of the slide entry continues. Last season there were no entries to the Entry Level slide competition.  However many Advanced workers continue to produce slides by traditional methods and enjoy the challenges that this media presents. For this season, at least, the Projected Image competition in the Advanced Section will continue to be based exclusively on  35mm slides (produced by whatever method). In the Entry Level Section, however, the images will be presented as jpeg files (further details on how to do this will be made available before the season starts).

Continuing as we did last season, prints/slides will be examined by the competition judge during the week prior to the competition evening. This gives the judge more time to formulate his comments and should result in a more considered choice for his awards. His choices will still, of course, be personal and subjective.

This means that all entries without exception must be delivered to the competition secretary one week before the competition.

We think that the projection of the images of prints has improved the experience for the majority of our membership, but we would like to improve the quality of the projection by producing the digital images ahead of time rather than live. To make this manageable we would request that printed entries are accompanied wherever possible by a jpeg file for projection. This should leave only a few prints which will need to be rephotographed before the competition.

It should be stressed that it will continue to be the mounted prints which are judged. The judges will not be given copies of the jpeg files.
